About the Event
South Park City Museum is an accurate representation of a CO mining town between 1860 and 1900. Forty-four authentic buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts portray most of the economic and social aspects of boomtown life. Seven of the buildings are on their original sites; the others have been moved from abandoned camps and ghost towns in South Park. The restored buildings contain period room settings and exhibits illustrating life in a nineteenth century Colorado mining town. For more information, check out this Colorado Experience episode.
Starting at the usual spot, Loaf 'N Jug in Golden, we'll follow Golden Gate Canyon Road and Robinson/Douglas Rd until we meetup at the Two Bears Grill parking lot at US-6/I-70. These are fun twisty-turny roads, but the last 2.5 miles of Douglas Rd are steep and narrow without guard rails. During the driver's meeting we'll discuss an alternative route and meetup spot.
After 25 minutes on I-70 (too long) we'll take US-6 over Loveland Pass to the Dillon Amphitheater for a long rest stop and BYO picnic lunch. I did a test run last week and both Loveland Pass and the Dillon views were spectacular! The Amphitheater toilets were locked, with only Porta-Potties available. If that doesn't suit your lifestyle, there are easy alternatives we'll discuss at the driver's meeting.
From Dillon we'll parade thru Brecekenridge, then take CO-9 over Hoosier Pass to Fairplay and South Park City Museum ($9 fee). Here's a link to the route. Total driving time is ~2.5 hours so we'll have the driver's meeting at 9:45 and leave Golden at 10:00 sharp. With lunch and a couple stops, plan to be in Fairplay around 1:30. The self-guided tour of South Park City takes ~1 hour. We will end the drive in Fairplay so folks can head home however and whenever they want.
RSVP will help me gauge the crowd, but it's not required. Email me at glhalcomb@gmail.com.
